Advantages Pleasant, clean location that is easy to sail to.
Friendly and efficient staff that really welcome cruisiers. Public Bus stop located just outside Marina gate. The marina runs a free scheduled shuttle
service to the 2 closest MRT stations - takes about 15 mins. It
is very difficult to catch the return shuttle as they do not pick-up
at Jurong Point Shopping Centre. So best to take either SBS Bus
192 or 193 back to Raffles. Very convenient for boats heading North to
Phuket.
Disadvantages: Located in a remote area of the island, away from
all cruising amenities.
Cruising Amentities
Grocery Stores - Liberty
and Fair Price at Level B1 in Jurong Point Shopping Centre at the Boon Lay MRT
station. Liberty is more expensive but has more American and
Australian imported brands. Fair Price has some imported brands but less
"western type" produce. (See Shopping Centers for
directions on how to get to Jurong Point.) The unpleasant odor
you will smell at the store is a local fruit "delicacy" called
Durian. They are banned on the buses and MRT for obvious reasons.
Internet Access - Raffles
Marina, Dockmaster's Office. Use their internet PC for $3.00 hr. or
plug your own PC into a phone line - free 1st hr. and $S1.00 each hour
thereafter.
Postal Services - Singapore
Post is located at Jurong Point Shopping Mall at Boon Lay, Level B1
Propane Gas Canister Refill - Chandlery
at Raffles. Take empty bottle to chandlery and leave for them to have
refilled.
Shopping Centers - The nearest shopping center is
Jurong Point Shopping Centre located at the Boon Lay MRT station. To get
there, catch Bus 192 or 193 at the bus stop located across the street from
the Raffles Marina front gate. Take the bus to the end of the line at the
Boon Lay Interchange and MRT station. The shopping center is located right
there.
Self-Service Laundry - The
only self-service Laundry is at Raffles Marina. As of January 2001, the
washers and dryers used tokens which cost $S5.00 apiece. There is a dry
cleaners/laundry at Jurong Point Shopping Centre at Boon Lay, but they
charge by the piece and are quite costly.
Banks/ATMs - Jurong
Point Shopping Centre, Boon Lay.
Currency
Exchange Services - Blooming
Enterprises, Jurong Point Shopping Centre, Shop B1-32.
Buses - Buses
192 or 193 stop at the bus stop located just across the
street from
Raffles Marina front gate and run approximately every 8-12 minutes.
Take the bus to the end of the line to the Boon Lay Interchange and MRT
station to get to the nearest shopping center and the MRT (Mass Rapid
Transit) station. The ride will take approximately 30-40 minutes and costs
$1.30 for an air-con bus or $1.05 for non air-con bus when you use
a fare card. The fare will be approximately $0.10 more for cash.
(You must have exact change for bus fare.)
Subway - The
closet MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) station into the city is located at Boon
Lay. (See Buses category on how to get to the station.) The trains run
approximately every 2-5 minutes and since this is the end of the East-West
line, either track goes into the city. A fare card system is used for the
MRT.
Taxis - Taxis are plentiful in the city and at the shopping center
at Boon Lay and generally reasonably priced. The fare to get to
Raffles from Boon Lay will be about $10.
Trivia: Mobile phone
SIM cards can be purchased for all GSM digital phones at any of the
telecom providers. This allows you to make local and overseas phone
calls, although overseas calls will be cheaper if you also use an
international phone card.
